In a previous post we introduced the first core principle of the XSCALE framework for Agile Organisations – eXponential return, and described how an Agile Organization targets exponential ROI through continuous development of new products and services
How do we do this in the most efficient manner possible, so that our time, effort and money is invested in the product or service features that will deliver the best possible rate of return and the best customer outcomes?
To achieve this effectively, you need to create a ecosystem of services and draw customers into that ecosystem, keeping them happy with your services so that they will actively recommend and promote your products to others.
The key to achieving this is having a consistent design within and across the products and services your company provides. However, none of the major design philosophies really answer the questions as to how, practically, to achieve this:
- Design thinking
- Set based design
- Emergent design
Design is not something customers can do for you. It has been said, that if Henry Ford had canvassed people on whether or not he should build a motor car, they would have probably told him that what they really wanted was a faster horse.
This second video in the series from Peter Merel (XSCALE Alliance CTO) shows how to combine the design methods of Apple, IDEO. XP and Toyota, using Pirate Metrics, BDD and Reductive Reasoning to generate simple designs for your products and value streams.
In future posts we will discuss the other elements of the XSCALE framework which contribute to achieving eXponential return:
- Continuous Optimization
- Autonomous Teams
- Triple Loop Learning
- Ecosystems Thinking
